The Reading Room - back on schedule

Current Location: The Reading Room
After I recced "Emmanuel" by [info]foxcat74, I realised most of the Reading Room regulars had taken the opportunity to comment when it was posted last January (my mistake). Still I got a lot out of revisiting it and I'm sure others did too, including those who posted their comments this time around.

Back to normal this week, it's:
"Brass Tacks" by Gloria Lancaster, at

http://hatstand.slashcity.net/gloria/brass.html
http://www.thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/3/brasstacks.html

I'll do a little post on Thursday 12 November. See you then.

SPN vid rec: For My Brother by Ancasta

This is my early Christmas present from the marvellously talented [info]ancastar, so this is by no means a drive-by. If no one minds, I'm gonna take some time to savour this.

In 2005, I spent a month in Texas and Louisiana where I discovered and fell in love with the band Blue October. Fronted by two brothers from Texas, one of whom writes and sings about his fair share of personal demons, when SPN rolled around, I just knew that their vocals, style and lyrics would match up perfectly with Sam and Dean. Not having one whit of vidding skills, I batted my eyes prettily at An when I stayed with her this summer, made her lots of nice salads, bonded with Milo, and she caved, saying if I picked the song, she would make me a Supernatural vid to it for Christmas.

Heh.

Armed with lyrics and sound files, we spent an evening going over some of the songs and ideas in my fevered little fannish brain. Her being an angel, she picked the song I loved the most..

And I was right.

It's perfect.

Though even I did not realise just how perfect until her talented hands worked their magic on it. If you want to see just how brilliantly Sam'n'Dean appropriate this song is, then go under the cut for the lyrics. For those who'd like to cut to the chase, just go to the link and watch. It's not Wincest, it's simply Sam'n'Dean from the pilot to S5. The lyrics let her get two POVs in, (the switch to Dean's near the end is positively wibble inducing), she bookended it with the perfect choice of clips and dialogue, and she filled it up inbetween with the epic bromance that is Sam and Dean, in all its joys, trials and tribulations.

And she did it for me... ::sniffs and wibbles all over again::

This is for my darling [info]callistosh65. She'd visited me over the summer, and had brought with her a list of songs she would love to see made into vids for Supernatural. I'd told her we would pick one, I'd make her a vid, and it would be her Christmas present from me. I needed to get this finished a little early, as shortly I'll probably be at less than my best--thus, Christmas the second week of November. (Ho, ho, ho!)  One owed vid down.  One more to go.

Of all the songs under consideration (and this woman came not only with sound files at the ready, but with lyrics printed out!), this was her first choice. I hope I've done it justice. Merry Christmas, honey! I had a blast working on your vid (even if I did call you evil and complain almost incessantly all through the process--bitching is how I show my love!)

It can be downloaded here. (Please right click to save.) The file has been encoded with xVid, so you'll either need the codec or the VLC player to view it. It's also available embedded below.  Please give a round of applause to two eagle-eyed individuals, my oh-so-talented betas, [info]przed and [info]lauramcewan, both glorious vidders themselves.  Thank you, ladies.  You were all kinds of help.

random, black cat and SPN

Yes, I like Robbie Williams.
Never fancied him, but I find him crazy and adorable and so little-boy-lost, and he's all growing up now. I think it's cute. Judge me ;)

I may have bought myself a Comedian costume...no idea why. But oh how I love it.

Am fostering a black cat for an undetermined period of time. Black cats are a world of their own.

In SPN news, if Gabriel has been the Trickster all this time...oh, no, Kripke, you didn't. Love the idea of Gabriel, but love me a Trickster too. Hands off the Trickster!
In watching SPN, I realized lately (the past year or so) I've been watching it as if it were an AU version of 'my' show...weird.

Oh John Winchester, where art thou?

ETA: forgot, watched:
District 9 (interestingly done, nice pacing, borrowing from Enemy Mine and Alien Nation, but more cool because of the settings...still, I enjoyed watching it)
and
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and enjoyed that too, colourful and not as weird as one could expect, and oh Heath Ledger, throwing your life away so. Stupid, really.

Loving my lj app

Where t'internet went...

Posted by [info]byslantedlight on 2009.11.09 at 19:06
A quickie before I away downstairs to get some dinner, but landlady greeted me with news of why we lost our internet for so long yesterday (and technically the day before too...) - thieves. Apparently someone dug up the piping/wiring to strip it of copper, which is fetching a pretty price at the moment... (There's copper in telephone wires/cables? Really?) BT had to get more cable all the way from Cardiff and Landlady very generously said that after all her moaning about them yesterday (on no basis whatsoever) maybe it wasn't entirely their fault after all...

Landlady then followed this all up by saying "Gypsies..." - as in Gypsies will have stolen it... which... just... ohmigods! And she said this right in front of her six year old, with absolutely no evidence other than "Well, that's what they do, isn't it..." The woman's Scottish, and a single mother, and her ex- and father of Child is black - you'd think that somewhere in there there'd be a wee bit of understanding that it's not good to stereotype... but apparently not. Sodding people!

I'm gonna go and cry into my Quorn now, and fiendishly plot ways of moving... still, and again.

And then NaNoWriMo some more - up to 12,418 so far today, but that means I've still got 2,582 words to write before I'm caught up to where I should be. Eeeeep!

I can haz interwebs again! So... stuff!

Posted by [info]byslantedlight on 2009.11.09 at 07:45
Much dancing and joy, because against all odds the internet was back when I woke up this morning - after being down for well over twenty four hours! (And the phones too, but... internet!) Twenty four hours without was just... weird - and worse cos I'd planned a quiet day in catching up this and getting started on that, and all of it lj-based... waah! So instead I did alot of cleaning... useful things... I finally made leek and potato pasties to take to work for lunch... stuff like that. I was bored - no friends to play with! It's nice knowing you guys are out there, I don't like it when you go away... *stomps foot* *g*

I didn't do much writing, which is weird, cos you'd think it'd be ideal - no distractions - but... I'd start, and then I'd want to check something, or my eyes would keep wandering to the little world icon that wasn't there, or they'd flick down to where it tells me whether I've got new emails and it'd be blank and... I just couldn't concentrate! So now I have nearly three whole NaNoWriMo days worth of writing to catch up on - eeep! Luckily boss is off work this week, so it should be nice and quiet...

T'internet also dropped out just as I was in the middle of watching the fourth episode of Girl Number 9 - waaah! I can't watch now until I come home - I hope they don't take it down, I need it to stay up just a bit longer...

Hmmn, what else? Have woken up to news that Wal-Mart has banned a gay couple for life - for not shoplifting, and upon googling for more information have discovered that the Wal-Mart CEO signed a petition to ban same-sex couples from adopting children. Relevance to the UK? Wal-Mart owns Asda! So shopping at Asda = shopping at Wal-Mart... Just sayin'... *g*

Also... I went to fireworks on Saturday night!

Shiny pretty things )

Uuuuum... watched East Lynne, but didn't post (obviously...).. Erm... Okay, I should go and do useful things like writing back to emails and comments and things, now that I've indulged my need to babble, right? Right... Hello, happy flist! So glad you're back... *g*

Garrow's Law

Is anyone else watching this? I am thoroughly enjoying it, but then I love period dramas. When the BBC puts its money into quality drama it does so really well.

However, not particularly being up on 18th Century Law, other than what I have read, I havent a clue if it is accurate, but what I am watching I am really enjoying.

Happy birthday probodie!
