Almost there........... Kate Maclean's Redemption
............with about 70 pages to go, and despite dragging it out for as long as possible, the inevitable is rearing its ugly head as I approach the final section of Kate Maclean's Redemption. I feel so lucky and privileged to have been given the chance to read yet another Pros classic, one which I shall return to again and again..... but how to deal with the bereavement process? With the feelings of emptiness which always come after finishing an unforgettable story? With the conviction that nothing else will *ever* compare or satisfy? Maybe I should read it again *before* I finish it? Hmmmmm.....bit perverse that, even for me. Hope and pray that she'll write *more*.....? Form a Kate Maclean Survivors' Group? Any joiners? Any fellow addicts out there? Free Membership.......

Doyle was the second man to appear, shades in place, a stranger again in a well-cut dark suit..............

It took him just a moment to understand, and then he looked away from her to the helicopter and what she'd been staring at..... The Governor had still to disembark and Doyle was standing in place. And all his attention, it seemed, was fixed on Bodie.

Bodie couldn't see any emotion on his face, the shades seeme to mask more than his eyes, but they were turned toward him.

Bodie's eyes darted back to Sylvie and he found she was looking at Doyle again. And when Bodie looked compulsively back to the same place, Doyle was still looking at him......

And who could blame him?

And who could blame him? Who indeed! *g*

Thank you so much for this little excerpt, I'm seriously intrigued about this story.
I've read so many amazing comments about it, I'm not sure how much longer I can resist it.

Well, if you enjoy long, angsty, well-written stories, I'd recommend it! I hate repeating myself, but have you read KM's Yellow Brick Road? Another great Pros classic. Go on, treat yourself!

...if you enjoy long, angsty, well-written stories,...
Well, it's the level of angst I'm worried about, especially when it's Bodie suffering it! LOL
I have read YBR, but I get the impression Redemption is even more angsty?

Hmmmm, more angsty? I'm not sure. It does seem to be more about Bodie's thoughts (lots of dispirin consuming) and less on action and of course it is written from Bodie's point of view and not Doyle's so it's different in that respect. But yes, I have to say that Bodie *does* suffer, but, though I haven't finished it yet, I hope the suffering is worth it! And it better not be a death story or I shall cut my own throat......

It is something special, isn't it.

There was so much about this story that I loved, but I think one of the best things was that I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen next. Even when I was on the next-to-last page I wasn't sure how things were going to end.

Pros classic? Yep, definitely...

Oh, blimey, I hope they get it together *before* then! I think I've been very patient.

Ooooh, I hope this isn't your kind way of saying 'they don't get it together'!!!!!!?????? Call me shallow but I hate wasting money.

Bereaved. That is certainly how I feel. Please do start up a Kate MacLean Survivors Group - I'm joining up right now. I think I used the term "Kate MacLean Basket Case" to describe my own state, having finished Redemption two days ago.

I like the passage you chose - the addictive undertow of sweet justice - even if the narrator doesn't understand. So beautifully done.

Thank you! I'm finding the entire story completely riveting and I'm in awe at how the writer achieves that effect. Hmmmm.....come to think of it, I'm often in awe of good (Pros) writing.

And I now confer upon you the Order of No.1 Kate Maclean Basket Case or the KMBC.

You may indeed! I'll reserve a seat. And I still haven't finished it!

I was hoping we might take it over to your place at Ci5 for a discussion? And reach a wider audience....

I'm just going to post up a few of my thoughts here, since I am so very, very late to the party, but I really would like to share them with you at least.*g*

I read through most of the discussion threads at [info]ci5hq, which were wonderful! I was particularly interested to read all the comments about the effect of Bodie the unreliable narrator. I must admit, I did not get the jolt that some spoke of, I *got* fairly early on that we had a very damaged Bodie on our hands, and was aware that his interpretations of Doyle, of Veronica and of Cowley were being hopelessly coloured by all he's done to lock himself down and continue through life. I love, love, love the way KM handled that, the way we see Bodie slowly come to life - good and bad - his rage, his lust, his love, his temper, and my God, finally and ever so slowly, his sense of humour and fun. And the catalyst of course, is Doyle. I don't mind the way Bodie rages, or the way that Doyle seems to deliberately provoke him sometimes, because he's coming out of his shell and it's Doyle who's pulling him out, making him feel things again.

And can I just say how much I admire and repsect her for the ending? Words cannot convey the lump in my throat at the image of that still haunted Bodie and how absolutely perfect it was. Yes, they are together - wonderfully so. And yes, things will only get better. But Bodie will always be haunted, and rightly so. And Doyle will always worry about him. And rightly so ( I love those two examples KM gives us right at the end, especially the one where Bodie sees a man and woman walking with a young child and "the weight of might-have-beens had almost crushed his heart".

Incredible, incredble writing.

So yes, I'd like to join the Post-Redemption Stress Disorder help group now if I may??

Sorry, I've only just seen this post! I was looking for it at the Ci5HQ and for some reason it didn't appear in my mailbox.

Thanks for this.
